Yes, it is! Since 2014, the Thai Education Office in collaboration with the Thai Immigration Office, established an ongoing exam for the students to prove their levels of knowledge of Thai language. This happened mostly to control some specific "unethical" people who were trying to manipulate the system. This exam takes place every 6 months and it is necessary to renew an ED Visa.
